This might have been mentioned but I don't have time right now to read through all of the comments, so instead of using chips or crackers for dipping, if you cut up a red cabbage into pieces it works surprisingly well. I know it sounds kindof gross, because cabbage, but when it's raw and clean it barely has a taste, and then you smother it with hummus or dip or whatever and it provides all the crunch you need. People are sometimes amazed at homemade dip, but if you have a food processor or blender it takes nor more than 3 minutes and you get to control the amount of super oily tahini and add good stuff.
Then I cut a cucumber lengthways, scoop out the water pulp (I pretend to do something anti-wasteful with it but actually just throw it away, because what is it actually good for unless your making some eco-yuppie smoothie thing right then and there?) and cut the remaining pulp-free cucumber into sticks. They're crispy without the watery bit, and so low in calories I think they're effectively redundant as food. It's hot as hell, or at least irritatingly warm pretty much all the time in South Australia, so the cucumbers are always good. If you like baking up a storm on the weekend/what have you, you can make 'chips' out of spinach or kale or beet leaves, but I'm yet to have to actually give that a go. Nori (the sheets of seaweed you use for sushi etc) is good as a 'thin cracker' type thing. And cheap if you have an asian market close by.
Annie Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07007685117656221498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153420183297709972.post-40531205679627045152012-09-25T14:08:13.645-04:002012-09-25T14:08:13.645-04:00I didn't read all 212 comments so pardon me if...I didn't read all 212 comments so pardon me if someone has already mentioned this. We recently discovered PB2 powdered peanut butter. It comes in regular and chocolate. You mix it with water and it only has 45 calories per serving. It's not as good as real peanut butter but it's not bad. And the way it usually goes with most low cal substitutes is that if you don't eat the real thing for a long, long time they start to taste pretty good. I just squirt some Sriracha on that bad boy.

Also, as a snacker on a budget, I strain the inexpensive, grocery store brand plain, non-fat yogurt to make thick, Greek style yogurt. And then I write about it using more adjectives than necessary.
Instead of spending $7 -$8 on a big tub of Fage or Chobani, just pick up the $2.50 store brand yogurt. When you get home, line a colander or a strainer with coffee filters, put it in/over a big bowl, dump in your cheap ass yogurt, and let it sit in the fridge (covered with some saran wrap) for and hour to two hours, depending on how thick you want your yogurt. The volume of yogurt will reduce because you're straining out the liquid (whey?), but a quart strained for 1.5 hours only loses about 1/3 it's original volume and is enough to last me for a week. Use it for your dips or eat that shit with some fruit and cereal. An entire package is about 30 calories and are great if you like to taste things rather than get filled up when you snack. Sometimes I love the flavor of something so much that I don't stop eating even though I know I'm full, but with seaweed snacks I can have the flavor and not feel bloated or guilty afterwards. I get them at a local Asian food store because they're really cheap and have a million different flavors (teriyaki and plain old sea salt are my faves), but I know that health food stores sell Annie Chuns brand.
