Totally Gullible

HELLO, EVERYBODY.

I know I haven't been around here for a little while.  I'm not gonna apologize about it or craft some kind of drama to excuse it.  I've just been swamped with work and my childcare poofed into the atmosphere and this is my hobby that I make a hot $30 a month off, so it got pushed to the bottom of my priority list.

So, let's get back to talking about this makeup shit....

I know I've mentioned before my feelings on makeup gurus on YouTube or makeup blogs or whatever.  I've had more run ins with them lately since starting my polish business, since a lot of them will write to me and introduce themselves as gurus when they ask for review samples.  I'm always like OH, A GURU?!?  MMMM-HMMMM, TELL ME MORE.  I can write about cars, but it doesn't make me a master auto mechanic.  If you're in your 20s and you have a blog, you're not a guru.  You're a 20-something with disposable income and enough fingers to type up an opinion or hit the record button on your webcam.

I'm not a guru of fuck-all.  I'm not afraid to admit it.  I think makeup is fun, the same way I think organizing my refrigerator magnets or picking out clothes for my kid is fun.  It's not important, and it's not something anyone needs to endlessly seek knowledge about.  I write about it because I think it's fun, and there are a lot of missteps that are funny.  I'm not all like I AM THE GREAT AND ALL KNOWING GURU OF SLAP!!  I AM PERFECTION AND YOU ARE CURSED TO A LIFE OF HOMELY-NESS UNLESS YOU FOLLOW MY 873 RULES OF BEING PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL!!  A lot of times, I look like shit!  I'm wearing yoga pants and a J Mascis shirt right now, and my shirt might even be dirty since it was sitting next to the duplicate one I have, and I couldn't tell which one I had worn.  I haven't even washed my face yet.

My point I'm getting at is that I'm a stupid asshole.  Basically everyone is a stupid asshole, though, so I think my stupid asshole-ness is a common trait we can all bond over.

One thing I am major league stupid for is lip stuff.  Not lipstick, not stains or whatever.  Bog standard lip stuff that you put on because your lips look dry.  I am an idiot for it.  I buy the nice shit.

I have a spending philosophy, and it's that I won't pay money for stuff that is just a special one-off thing or special occasion or something weird that I might not like.  The stuff I will slam down for is the stuff that I use every single day.  It doesn't make sense to me to pay a lot for something if I am not going to use it everyday.  My little clutches and fancy dress up purses are the cheapest shit I can find, but my daily purse is a miraculous vision, because I have to carry it at all times and I get in and out of it 50 million times and it needs to stay looking good even if it clocks major use.  My kid dresses in all clearance rack clothes, but I always just get her a couple pairs of nice shoes so they hold up, since she isn't going to stain em up like her shirts and dresses, which have to be cheap enough that they are essentially disposable with the crap she gets all over herself and the speed at which her pants become highwaters and her skirts become weird flouncy belts.

So!  Lip crap!  I am a total moron about it!  I won't spend much on colorful lipstick, since I don't wear crazy colors everyday.  I will, however, get totally gouged on a tube of Fresh Sugar Rosé lip stuff.  It's completely functional as a chapstick and doesn't make my lips get that weird dryness that some lip stuff will give me, and it smells like lemons, and it has a little bit of tint so I look a little healthier.  The best part is that it's $22 or something, so I get all kinds of self loathing when I lose a tube.  The crank-up mechanism on it is more like a lipstick than a tube of chapstick, though, so when I use it constantly, it starts going a little Leaning Tower of Pisa on me, which is really a great feature for a $22 chapstick.  I love it.

My other completely ludicrous jam is the Dior Crème de Rose lip balm.  Who do I think I am?  Who knows.  This stuff is actually super rad if your lips are all dried out.  I keep it on my bedside table and put it on before bed, because I would rage the hell out if I kept it in my purse and lost it.  It smells totally awesome, and the container makes you feel like the fanciest lady ever...  it's some kind of heavy duty plastic that reminds me of ivory or something, and there isn't really much label to speak of, except for the sticker on the bottom.  It makes you feel like some fancy lady from the 40s with a lipstick in a gold tube instead of a clear plastic thing with some kind of loud logo on it.  My old man was saying his lips were all dried out and I tried to make him try it, but he refused, probably because rose scented glamor chapstick is emasculating, but he really should have.  ENJOY THOSE DRY LIPS, HOSS!

The jewel in my dumbass crown, however, is my Chanel Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer in Eden.  I'd only ever bought Chanel nail polish in the past, and only a couple times at that since I don't particularly care for their nail polish.  I bought this lip stuff for myself for Mothers Day, though, BECAUSE I AM SPECIAL, OKAY?????  This stuff is basically imaginary.

It starts out okay.  Like, it's pink lipgloss, right?

Then you open it, and it's all "Oh, I'm just slime in a tube."

Then you apply it and the color looks like this.  It really is
slime in a tube.

See?  I'm a total gullible dumbass for bougie chapstick.  The thing is, I am FINE with it not looking like anything, because now I can wear it every single day and not feel as bad about how much it costs.  Another thing to mark down in the PRO column is that it is so unimpressive and uncolored that I can put it on my daughter when her lips are dry, and putting Chanel lipgloss on a 4 year old makes you feel like Marie Antoinette.  Also, I will say, when I wiped it off my hand after taking that pic, that patch on my hand felt like a dream.  The CON column contains two items:  I AM TOTALLY STUPID and I SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF MYSELF.

*************************************************************************

Am I the only person who has completely dropped out of real life society in order to devote my entire existence to Animal Crossing?  I don't play video games.  The last time I played a video game on a fairly regular basis was the last time Animal Crossing came out on the old DS.  I just buy consoles to play Animal Crossing every few years, then don't play anything in between.

Do y'all play Animal Crossing?  Let's trade friend codes!!  I got all the fruits and a bunch of sleek series and regal series furniture, and about a trillion play coins I can use to set people up with fortune cookies, since I have no use for the Nintendo knicknacks that come from those.  Basically, I just want new Animal Crossing pals so I can stop cycling the same fucking furniture around through my animals and the 2 or 3 people I usually play with.  I am gonna kill someone if I get a tea tansu or a kiddie wall again.  If you're in the wish-granting mood, though, I want Gracie Grace clothes and Gracie furniture... especially the furniture, since it won't be in the Emporium anymore by time I get the upgrade in my town.  My code is 0361-6940-8681!!  Gimme your codes in the comments or email me at nataliedee@nataliedee.com...

Maybe we can all add each other and not have to worry about people running around wrecking our grass and picking our flowers and cutting our trees down, since we are all cool and mellow and aren't trying to be motherfuckers about stuff as important as Animal Crossing.

    1. if you buy any of the ones i mentioned, get the dior one. it's the nicest, and it has the value in terms of how fancy it makes you feel for the price. i prob should have mentioned that in the post hahaha.

      Delete
    2. best value. i left a word out there :/

      Delete
    3. But "the value" has such a great ring! It's as though no other products have enough value to even mention.

"Let's get the full fat ricotta, it has the value."
"This coffee is adequate, I suppose, but the French roast really has the value."

      LANGUAGE. It's so good.
Obvs I think about food more than makeup, but whatever.

  2. I too am a huge sucker for lip stuff. Since I'm generally pretty broke I can't usually get super fancy stuff, but if there's inexpensive health food store lip balm in my sight I will probably buy it. (Then again I buy so much cheap lip stuff I may as well just save it and splurge on the nice stuff.) I got a couple little tubes of Sugar lip treatment a while back and though I love the balm itself even the tiny ones do that Leaning Tower of Pisa thing and it seems like they get super melty really fast. Otherwise I would probably cough up the $22 for a full-size tube!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my (somewhat limited) experience, the smaller Sugar tubes lean, break and melt more easily than the full-size ones. Mine did, anyway.
I also suspect that certain colors/formulas break more frequently than others-- My first tube was Passion, and when it ran out, I bought Coral instead. It was terrible-- one broke on me within a day so I took it back (yay for Sephora's super nice returns policy!) and exchanged it for another one, which also broke within days. I exchanged that one for a tube of Passion, and I haven't had any problems with it yet. And I've had it for months. The Coral one was much creamier and the Passion is more translucent, and I suspect this has something to do with it.

I kind of feel ridiculous now for essentially writing an essay on the merits and flaws of various sizes and colors of Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment.

    2. I could probably also write an essay about the merits and flaws of various lip stuff, so if you're ridiculous so am I! (then again i'm pretty ridiculous). I'll check out the other flavors and colors, maybe the two I got were the wonkier flavors/colors.

  3. My Fresh Sugar lip stuff is nearly out. Like I keep scraping my lips on the plastic thing because I refuse to believe it's over. I've been trying to tell myself I could get a $3.00 eos and be happy. I would love to try that Dior one but I'm not a big fan of the pots.

  4. I love the Fresh Sugar but break them off about halfway through every time. Have you tried the TokyoMilk Dark collection? I bought Coco Noir No. 60. Smells, looks and feels hella spendy but it was only $7 for a big pot. LURV!

    1. I couldn't agree more about the TokyoMilk. They smell so good I just want to spread them on toast and eat them. And they're huge! And cheap. Ditto the LURV.

  13. Oh, this is my weakness too. A few years ago I made myself stop buying colored lip stuff (this is why: http://queserasera.org/archives/001132.html) but then I let myself slide down the slippery slope of "but it's a balm, it doesn't count" and now here I am with my Korres and my Sugar and Dior Addict Lip Glow (which feels fancy to apply but is a total scam). The low end of that pool are the Burts Bees tinted lip balms (I like Red Dahlia and Rose), which are nice, cost $7, have a touch of color, and don't have that menthol flavor like some of their other tubes.

    1. Oh man. I was about to leave a comment about the Dior Addict Lip Glow. I love that shit. I love everything about it and I don't even care that it is nothing more than fancy, over-priced chapstick. I think the scent is amazing and I love the texture. Just, you know, I gotta make sure I wipe it ALL off before reapplying or I get hot pink clown lips. Not a good look.

My Fresh Sugar Rosé is a Leaning Tower of Pisa too. Although I love the smell of the Fresh balm more, I like the tint of Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose. It moisturizes great for me. I wear it daily, which makes all my colored MAC lipsticks cry in their tubes.

  16. I usually will not buy a lip product over $10, but I did buy the OCC lip tars because they last long and you need to use so little. I recently bought the It Cosmetics Lip Flush in Pretty Woman and I adore it. I was kicking myself for spending $20 on it, but it turned out to be awesome and I will definitely repurchase it. I've been meaning to try the Dior because of I've heard good things, but I'm going to feel so guilty when I do.

I'm a sucker for the TokyoMilk Dark lip balms. The $16 set from Sephora with the salted caramel lip balm, roller ball, and hand cream is a great value. If they had a lip product in a tube or a stick I would hoard it.

  26. Were those mini Fresh Sugar lip balms a Sephora birthday present or 100 point bonus a few years ago? I know I had the regular one and the Rose one and loved them both, and yes, they did lean and then eventually break down at the bottom. Probably because to me, mini size equals pocket size, and I carried those damn things around everywhere in the hot summer.

I loved it but felt like too much of an asshole to spend $22 on a lip balm, so then I made my boyfriend buy me one for my birthday, and then felt like an asshole because now he knows that I like $22 lip balm.

It all balances out - I grabbed a 3 pack of Lipsmackers from Kroger on clearance for $1.79.

  42. Beauty gurus are ruining the makeup community on youtube. Not all of them, but a lot of them are popular enough (and some people seriously make enough off of ad revenue that it's their full time job) that they will not review any product that they don't get sent to them. And most of them are so fucking annoying. I don't subscribe to any of them, but when I want to know if a product is worth my money, I search youtube for reviews and there is so much dumbassery. Like, I came here for your thoughts on this blush, please don't spend the first five minutes telling me about your new hair cut. Make a different video. I have a lot of peeves about beauty vloggers.

And honestly, if someone is actively writing to companies for free products, they're just trolling for free shit. If you wanted to send out review samples for exposure, you could pick out people to contact who seem trustworthy and whose blogs you like. But it doesn't seem like you need help promoting your products.

  53. OT question: you once defended Miley Cyrus on your old blog, during the "Hannah Montana" days. What's your opinion now?

  54. So I saw a link to your post on a fragrance facebook group and I am in love with the way you speak your mind. I am going to start following you on Bloglovin so I don't miss any of your posts.

Since I am a dude and allergic to lip gloss because it will make me sprout breasts, I wanted to mention to you some chapstick/lip balm that I found at the ELements show which has been rocking my world. Smith & Chang Citrus Blossom Lip Balm. Its tube like chapstick, goes on slick like a treatments, and does not shine like a lip gloss (so its safe for Bro's.) It moisturizes my lips and feels amazing.

And no, I am not paid by S&C - I am a fragrance blogger who uses my face as a testing ground for grooming products that I write about.

  56. This is kind of a pain and my boyfriend thinks I'm nuts for it, but I store my Sugar Lip balms in the refrigerator when I'm not using them. It firms them up and prevents a lot of the leaning tower-ness when it gets melty. The Rose is pretty, but I much prefer my Coral and Cherry colors, because wear red lips every day. The Cherry, in particular, is easy to touch up at work without having to seek out a mirror.

Oh, and that Dior Lip Balm is a dream. Gorgeous packaging holding an almost perfect lip balm. And for those wondering, it does last me about 4-6 months of regular use, so I really don't feel too bad about purchasing it.
