HELLO PEOPLE/Drugstore Lip Stuff/Gel Strips

I trust y'all had a decent holiday...  Mine was alright.  I tell you what, though, the transition from the laying-on-the-couch-style holiday break and the my-kid-has-no-school-and-is-bored-in-my-face-while-I-am-trying-to-secretly-make-her-dreams-come-true-style is a bit much.  That shit is over the top.

The elephant in the room is obviously the month long hiatus on this blog...  I was set to post in mid-December, but then there was that shooting and it seemed gauche/callous/yucky to post that day about vain stuff, then the holidays popped up with the combo of extreme busy-ness and no school/childcare, and now here we are!  I'm back on the regular weekly/sometimes more often than weekly schedule now, though.  I got some posts planned and some videos, and I am going to have a contest but I need to think more about how I am going to run it, since there aren't any cosmetic company people telling me what to do and how to run it and what the prize is gonna be.  Actually, I already know what the prize is gonna be, cause I already bought it, but I need to plan the contest itself.  If anyone has any great ideas, feel free to share them, otherwise I am just going to pull something out of my ass.

SO!  I'm just gonna do a quick-n-dirty post about STUFF!!

Q:  I need help finding the right lipstick for me.

I'm black (a perfect match for Soft Honey #455--I promise it's not spam! just a reference point) and I have pretty versatile skin.  BUT, and it's a big one, most black makeup "gurus" on youtube or whatever wear really light, bubblegum pink colors. No shade, it's just not my way...

I hate it.  I really don't like how most lip colors look or wear on me. So I wear a lot of chapstick and dark glosses (think deep mauve, dark berries) because of this.

It might help to mention that I'm working with a college grad budget, so not much is poppin off over here; definitely no ballin, at least.

So my ultimate question is this: do you wear, or at least have you seen any boss, darker lipstick colors on your journey?

A:  What is with those super light lipstick colors?!?  Actually, I know what the deal is... Everybody is trying to be Nicki Minaj.  Now, I am not gonna play like I haven't been listening to Nicki Minaj 24/7 since I was buying mixtapes off her on Myspace years and years ago, but let's be real about how there is some questionable aesthetic shit going on there now.  She basically was the hottest person in the universe, and now she is just too too much.

(left) hell fucking yes.  (right) hmmm maybe not.

Anyway, what I am getting at is that I totally fucking hate that bubblegum pink lipstick, I think it is really gross looking.  It makes it look like you were pigging out on Necco wafers all day and it made your mouth all chalky.  NOBODY looks good in it. :( :( :(

Lipstick is pretty easy to get at the drugstore!  I have a lot of drugstore lipsticks that I really super love!

My favorite regular-lipstick at the drugstore is probably Revlon Super Lustrous...  It's not real heavy and gross-feeling, it has a nice feel to it.  I would say it is pretty comfy.  I use it like regular lipstick, or I tap it on really lightly and then put gloss over it and it has a stainy/sheer gloss kind of look going on.  This stuff is pretty solid regular lipstick.  My favorite color is Wild Orchid, which might look pretty sweet on you, but if you don't go for something bright like that, I understand.  I've also had luck with Wine With Everything.  If you generally are feeling mauve/berry shades, they have a ton of those, too.  Berry Haute and Berry Rich both look pretty...  The nice thing is that this kind of lipstick has been around forever, so it is probably not going to be discontinued like a lot of colors that are new lipshit technology or whatever.  Also, they have about 19 billion colors.

Honestly, I wear a lot of dark glosses, too.  If it's working for you, then by all means wear it.  Glosses are just nice for daily wear, because they look more casual, and they don't look grody when they wear off.  Also, they are easier to reapply.  I like the Infallible 8 Hour lipgloss pretty well.  I like how it seems to set up a little bit when you put it on, so it's not super slimy.  Also, I get more lipstick complements when I wear it than other lip things I wear.  I use the Dazzle Me (which seems to be discontinued) and the Barely Nude ones, but the Raisin and Glistening Berry look like good colors, too.  I also like the Colour Riche Le Gloss.  The Plum Rush one is awesome...  It looks super dark in the tube, but it has a mega-sheer gel type of thing happening, and the color is more like a berry shade when you put it on.

If you were in the mood to splurge, though, I would recommend the Clinique Black Honey.  It's not super duper expensive, and it's really flattering on most people.  If you poke around online, there are pics of all kinds of ladies looking good in it-- pasty ones like me, asian ladies, light-complected black  ladies, dark-complected black ladies, olive-complected ladies.  That shit is versatile.  I keep a tube in my purse because it's easy as hell and always looks decent.  I even rebuy it, which is a pretty good indicator of a good cosmetic since there is only a small handful of things I rebuy.  I usually try stuff, then try something different.  Anyway, that is usually like $14 or $15.  Not cheap but not hella-expensive if you want a treat.  I've been wearing a lot of stuff like this or tinted chapstick type stuff lately because I got pink glasses, and I haven't figured out how to do lipstick with pink glasses and not look like a momo yet, but I digress.

This definitely isn't an exhaustive list of good drugstore lipsticks.  It is pretty easy to find cheap and decent stuff.  Also, a lot of drugstores will let you return cosmetics.  I experiment more with colors when I buy drugstore stuff, instead of plunking down for some fancy stuff that might look like ass.  The only drugstore stuff I don't fuck with is the Milani or Wet n Wild.  I don't know, it just makes me feel like I'm 11 or something.  I'm sure it's fine, though.

QUICK REVIEW:  SALLY HANSEN GEL STRIPS

I was sooooo excited when I heard they were making these.  I love strips and I love gel.  I was all about it.

I got a package and tried them out.  They were easy to put on, the gel topcoat was pretty easy to deal with.  They sucked a donkey's asshole, though.  They came off my nails faster than regular nail strips would.  I also had to buff my nails beforehand (they told me to in the instructions) and that shit always fucks my nails up and makes them split way more often and I have to grow the buffed part out.  My nails are just too thin, and I don't have nail to spare for buffing.

It seems like people in general seem to dislike them, too, seeing as there ain't that many stars on any of those Amazon listings.

I am pretty good at doing my nails.  It's basically my thing.  I've been doing regular salon-style gel manicures on myself for probably 2 years or something.  The regular gel manicures I do last forever, so I don't think it failed because I didn't know what I was doing.  Thumbs down, Sally Hansen Gel Strips.  Just get the regular, not-gel ones.  Those still rule.

*********************************************************************************************************

If y'all are keeping tabs on my new nail polish biz, you might be interested to know I have a small handful of Lakes + Fields and a smaller handful of Jimmy left, and they are on clearance for $5.  I am tweaking things and making some changes and want to get the last of my existing stock out of the way so when I bring out the new stuff and the new everything else, I don't have the old stuff still hanging around.  I like everything to be matchy matchy matchy, I will have palpitations if everything doesn't match hahaha.

    I missed u, internet lady! *_*

Grav3yardgirl on YouTube does giveaways/contests. She uses Rafflecopter. Or for contest videos, people submit a vid, she watches them and then picks one. Some people use random.org for comment contest.
    Hope that helps a lil.

  2. Damn, I forgot how much I used to LOVE Clinique Black Honey. I think I had one for every pocket and purse and backpack in high school. I should bring that back.

  3. DUDE. Nicki Minaj. She went from being possibly one of the greatest rappers ever to a gross, Katy Perry popstar. I have all these feminist theories about how record companies couldn't handle a woman rapper and had to water her down to a popstar. I miss her fucking rhymes. She straight-up stole Monster from Kanye and Jay-Z. What about this Nicki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojAyFFfO2Po ? Who styled her into the a Harajuko Barbie? Did you see her E! Special? E! did not paint a pretty picture. I guess all that pop bizniss is working for her, but damn, I miss Nicki Minaj the rapper.

Do you know about Chicago Drill? That, my frond, is a crazy rap game Google-hole to fall down. This is a good introductory article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/07/arts/music/chicago-hip-hops-raw-burst-of-change.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 After you read it, go to Youtube and check out the women they mention in the article (ie Katie Got Bandz).

    1. i'm not gonna lie, i like her either way. i know some people don't like the pop stuff, but i always read it like she is just shrewd as hell and had her chance to get a lot of exposure, so she tweaked things to make sure she got as popular as possible when she got her shot. i'm not gonna hate on anyone for that. she's a musician and if you're a musician you want to make money, and if she was just doing her old style, it would have been easy to hide her in rap crews and not give her the exposure she has now just because most people don't like that kind of stuff. i love her old stuff so so so much, but i can appreciate her newer stuff, too. i'm not going to hate her for trying to get paid as hell, i'd probably do the same thing.

  4. I've been all about the NYX brand of lipsticks as of late. Great formula, tons of shades and you can get them at Ulta super cheap / buy one get one / buy one get one half off always.

@ Ivy - I think even Harajuko Barbie is giving Nicky Minaj some shade now-a-days!

  5. Have you watched beautycrush on youtube? She is pretty close to that color, maybe a little lighter, and I've never seen her recommend any bubblegum colors. She's in the UK though, so she does recommend a lot of things that might be hard to find in the US. Also, the Revlon Lip Butters are somewhat sheer so you can get away with wearing brighter colors that are not in-your-face. They also have a dark red and a dark brown that are more opaque, and they are really moisturizing.

OH NO NATALIE. Please say you have not discontinued The Bends! I didn't buy it before the holidays because of general unfortunate finances, but I will seriously die if I never get a bottle of that. I will die right the fuck now.

Also, for anyone who happens to be reading this: NUDE LIPSTICK QUESTION. Can anybody recommend any nude lipsticks for a really pasty pale girl? I like to do up my eyes and my usual schtick is to wear just a clear or very light tinted gloss over my naturally-pink lips so as to not overdo it, but lately I have a bee in my bonnet to give nude stick a whirl. I have NEVER worn lipstick before because every one I have sampled has had that nasty-ass flaky, drying shit going on. It doesn't have to last forever or not come off when I eat a sandwich, it just has to be a lovely pale color and not make me feel like my lips are peeling off.

    Thoughts?

    1. i'm only discontinuing strange days, jimmy, and lakes + fields. i am going to be restocking the rest of them once i have the new stuff all shored up.

as for nude lipstick, there isn't really any beige or light brown tones to my lip, so i usually get something that is a soft rosy color. proper nude lipstick always looks disgusting on me, but something that matches the inside of my lip always looks great. the nude lipsticks that are labelled as such are not usually nude for everyone... pasty people and people with darker complexions should find a lipstick that looks nude to them, not neccessarily what the makeup place says is nude.

      Delete
    2. anyway, i usually end up with a pale mauve or rosy color... i meant to add that at the end but clicked the button too fast ;)

    3. I'm quite pale and always had the same trouble with "nude" lip colors. I finally discovered my perfect shades a couple years ago. Lipstick is Laura Mercier "sparkling pink" (formerly "pink champagne"), for a nude gloss I like elf mineral in "sorority girl."

    4. I am pretty pale and I like Revlon Super Lustrous in Demure. It is pretty sheer though so that affects the staying power. In other words, be prepared to reapply frequently. Or just not care and let it rub off like I do.

    5. I'm almost as pale as Natalie (I think) and I like L'Oreal color riche no. 716. It calls itself "mauve" on the sticker, but it's pretty much the color of my lips, just a little nicer and maaybe a shade darker. I hope they still sell it though, I got mine a while ago.

    6. Kate Moss for Rimmel has a really good nude shade. As a Florida Gulf Coast Dweller Beach Bunny, I can't say that I know about shades for pale people.

    7. If you want to go really nude-nude, try getting Benefit's Lip Plump primer, putting on a thin coat of that, and topping with gloss. It's definitely more of a Look than just the lipstick-that-looks-neutral thing, but maybe it's what you're going for?

I feel like Revlon's Lip Butter in Fig Jam is a pretty good dupe for Clinique's Black Honey. Not exact by any means (I think it leans more brown), but it is cheaper and smells better. Just something to consider!

  8. I really like the Maybelline ColorSensational lipsticks. They aren't as nice as the Revlon Super Lustrous, and the packaging is tacky as fuck, but they are very good. My favorite shade is Totally Toffee (and I'm usually much more of a bold lip kind of person, this is pretty much the only neutral shade I wear on the regular), but there are tons to choose from. I've also been getting into the Revlon lip stains and they are okay, super comfortable to wear and very long lasting.

  10. I'm going to take a stand for wet & wild right now. While it totally does feel like you're in 7th grade again when you're standing in front of their terrible display, if you want to go out on a limb and try a color that is way out of your normal routine, they are so cheap it doesn't matter at all. You can get an idea, and then find a better brand. Also, when I was going through some weird mod thing a few years ago, they were the only drugstore makeup company I could find that still produced a white lipstick.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wet'n'Wild doesn't do white lipstick anymore. It is very sad.

However! A couple of their new lipsticks look very mod (I'm thinking of Just Peachy and Pink Sugar).

Also they have the closest thing to a nude I've ever been able to find (Bare It All); I'm pale like fishbelly so it's sort of more neutral than nude but for $2 I can deal with it not being perfect.

  11. In terms of awesome reds that compliment any skin color, I would recommend MAC's "Rebel" (it's kind of in the berry range but not cutesy magenta) and Makeup Forever's Rouge Intense Artist No. 44 (a blue based red that looks natural for day or night) I myself am pretty pasty, but my coworkers of all races raid my makeup bag during the day and those two colors seem to compliment everyone.

As to the other question, I think I tried nude lipstick once and looked like I was terminally ill.

Also, I'm really into this (he he) Chubby Stick from clinque. It's a step up from tinted lip balm, but more casual than lipstick: http://www.clinique.com/product/1605/15520/Makeup/Lipsticks/Chubby-Stick-Moisturizing-Lip-Colour-Balm/index.tmpl

Love the blog, it teaches me stuff I should have already known for my drugstore job. Curious - How do you feel about the "accent nail" trend (doing one nail a different color or fancier than the others)?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Natalie, thanks for coming back (I love you).

Do you happen to be aware of a brand of nail polish called SinfullColors? The reason I ask is because they have a new color out called "Beau Khaki." If you don't hear the WRONG right away, say it out loud a couple times. (Clearly someone in marketing is trying to get fired. Or promoted. It's hard to tell sometimes.)

It seems like the sort of thing you might think is funny.

Given, I've seen much, much worse... but filthy puns seem to be the domain of indy brands rather than large companies, no?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's really weird! I'd only expect that from an indie brand or maybe OPI. But OPI seems to keep their innuendo pretty tame.
The only kind I have from them is called "Social Ladder." I wouldn't buy it, because the only other color I've bought from them was seriously defective. Like the formula was all kinds of thick and gummy and took ages to dry. The bottle I still have seems completely fine.

      Delete
    2. i think you're bound to get to some filthy puns when you have to name 90 billion colors. i am sure only 4% of people even catch them.

      Delete
    3. cloudsnapper: Sinful is so, so, so hit-or-miss. They're one of my favorite brands but some of their shades just suck out loud (too sheer, too goopy, staining, etc). I'm now in the habit of Googling specific colors before buying (thank fuck for beauty blogs, amirite?).

Natalie: I'm just glad that the 4% get online and tell the rest of us every time it happens, more fun that way.

The minor disappointment with "Beau Khaki" is that it's military green. I'd've totally bought it if it was a sick shade of off-white or something, just out of respect (because if you're gonna name shit like that, you might as well own it).

  16. I really love your blog. As someone with nearly transparent fair skin and freckles I often find it hard to find make up that provides coverage, but that doesn't totally obliterate my freckles (as I am fond of them). Any advice on make up for the hopelessly Irish?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i have no idea, i am super pale, but i have some acne scars and stuff i need to cover up, and not a single freckle or pigment spot on my face... i do full foundation + concealer, which i am sure would cover freckles up. maybe a light tinted moisturizer to even out your skintone and a concealer on zits or spots you want to cover, then something like UD razor sharp on top? i use the razor sharp to set my makeup because it's really lightweight and has no color to it, so i am sure freckles would show through. maybe someone else reading here can chime in?

      Delete
    2. I have a ton of freckles and I use BB cream and a very sheer mineral powder. You probably wouldn't need a powder on top, unless the BB cream makes your skin shiny like it does for me. (I don't think it's common for that to happen.) I tried out the one Natalie recommended a while ago and like it, but someone said they make a version of it for people with more oily skin so when I run out I'll try to find that one. http://www.amazon.com/SKIN79-Oriental-Gold-Cream-Cheek/dp/B002C1JEPM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357662355&sr=8-1&keywords=the+oriental+bb+cream
You could get an american one, too, but it might not be as moisturizing or have sunscreen in it. I know I'd skip those steps if they weren't built into my make-up.
But that really really evens up my skin and doesn't block out the freckles much.

I really like Benefit Some Kinda Gorgeous in Light for this. It evens out my skintone and gives me a bit of spf, doesn't break me out, and lets some of my natural skintone go through. That said, I'm all about the UD naked skin right now, which is the first thing I've found that actually covers me and doesn't break me out.

    4. Another pale chick added to the fold - I use almay smart shade anti-aging foundation and really like it. I never used foundation until i found it. It gives you nice even coverage without making you look airbrushed or cakey.

  19. Since you mentioned nail strips, I got the Influenster Voxbox with Kiss nail strips. Idk how well the other brands work, but these got fucked up when I unbuttoned my shirt to go to bed. These were regular buttons and I wasn't even drunk or anything. They were kind of dimensional, so maybe that had something to do with it and the completely flat ones might be better. They're really cute so they're cool for a party or something, but not really worth the price unless your nails are fairly narrow and you think you can get 2 uses out of a pack. (I'm pretty sure I can and my nails aren't all that narrow.)
Are the Sally Hansen ones more sturdy?

    1. the sally hansen ones are legit. every other brand i have tried have suuuuuuucked, especially the sephora brand ones. those ones shred when you pull them off the backing, so they are fucked before you even put them on.

    2. also, i can get 2 uses out of a pack... i just use one of the packets that come in the box and cut them in half and use one thumb strip on both thumbs, one pointer finger on both pointer fingers, etc etc. also, they last on me for 4 or 5 days, which is a miracle since i am mega-hard on my nails with all the stuff i gotta do everyday. the gel ones suck ass, though.

If you want to get a little more bang for your buck on it, wait for Clinique's "Bonus" promotions (y'know, when they give you the makeup bag with a bunch of little samples in it) to buy it. That's what my mother and I do when it's time to re-up on our Black Honey supply (we are both like you, Natalie, and always have a tube in our purses). You have to spend a certain amount of money to get the bag, but a couple of units of Black Honey more than meets the necessary purchase.

    2. it's not that i've never tried that stuff... i have bought those brands when i've needed something funky for a party. most recently i got some WnW eyeshadow and a milani pencil and bother were really terrible. so terrible, in fact, that i had to just go to the funky makeup party in my regular old makeup. it's just not a good deal if you can't use it, or if you don't like using it enough to use it up.

      Delete
    3. bother is supposed to be both

      Delete
    4. Yeah, agreed, the quality is really hit or miss. But sometimes they get it right. Like, Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso is close enough to Nars Orgasm on me and I feel pretty savvy about saving $20 on marketing. And WnW creme liner is great, although the brush that comes with it is the most painful thing I've ever intentionally put on my eye. Personally, I don't buy that stuff unless I've read an extremely positive review on a blog with a good picture or it's on super clearance. It's weird that even though they're considered bargain brands a lot of the time they're only about a dollar or two cheaper than more respectable drugstore stuff at regular price. I remember buying some $7 clear lip gloss from Milani for some reason and it was just the worst texture, the worst tasting, the worst smelling, with a horribly unflattering gloopy sheen, AND obviously the packaging sucked. Ugh. I can definitely understand not trusting them if your stuff was anything like that.

They have a great look and feel and staying power and everything and I have loved the colors I've tried. Number 11 is a great darker red that isn't too bright or too winey, and I think it would go great with your skin tone.

  29. So... I've been a long-time reader and sometimes buyer (my fav shirt is the "set your neighbor's house one fire") but I had never heard of black honey, until this post. My grandma always buys some fancy clinique stuff, and gives me the free things, and this last time she gave me some, I looked and I got a free tube of black honey. Holy crap, guys, that made me pretty excited.
I don't think I have tried to paint my own nails in more than 15 years, and mostly when I put on makeup I feel silly, because I look, to me, like a weirdo. But I have been trying, and getting better at it, because I like to feel like I real grownup woman who can do this.
Yeah. SO thank you for this blog, it has helped me a lot, seriously. I love reading your stuff.
